Her mother shared how her daughter had a part time job in a local clothes shop and was currently working as one of the assistant managers whilst finishing high school.
It was so great to hear how her daughter was going, and I shared how I could still remember the way she would always hug me goodbye at the end of the day and say ‘see you tomorrow Ms B’, with a sweet spring in her step.
As we said goodbye, this parent took my hand and said:
My daughter is so confident in herself because of you. You always reminded her to stop hiding how great she was from the other children. I will never forget how that made me feel as a parent when I heard you share that with her one day. You really saw my child for who she was.
The level of care and connection we bring to the classroom showed me how powerful this was and how it does go beyond the classroom. I could feel myself smiling from the inside, and I was feeling a deeper appreciation of what I bring when I connect with children.
This chance meeting allowed me the opportunity to appreciate how this child was turning into this incredible young woman, not only by the impact of her parents, but the role teachers have in nurturing and supporting children each day in being themselves.
Who would have thought that by going away on a holiday, I was taking a break from work for a while, but I was not taking a break from the deep appreciation parents have for teachers just like you and me.
